What Makes It Special

The Palace on Wheels, Reimagined

The Maharajas' Express was launched in 2010 by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) as the successor to the legendary Palace on Wheels. It is the most expensive luxury train in Asia and consistently ranked among the world's top luxury trains by Condé Nast Traveller and Travel + Leisure. The train recreates the lifestyles of India's princes — the maharajas — who once traveled in their own private railway carriages.

Four Routes Across India

The Heritage of India runs Mumbai to Delhi via Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, and Ranthambore. The Indian Panorama runs Delhi to Delhi via Jaipur, Ranthambore, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Orchha, Khajuraho, Varanasi, and Lucknow. The Indian Splendor runs Delhi to Mumbai via Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Vadodara. The Treasures of India is a 4-day Golden Triangle route. Each route includes guided excursions, monument entry fees, and meals. Elephant rides, camel safaris, and boat cruises are included.

Presidential Suite Living

The train has 23 coaches with four cabin categories: Deluxe, Junior Suite, Suite, and the Presidential Suite. The Presidential Suite spans an entire carriage — 448 square feet with a separate bedroom, living room, bathroom with bathtub, and private butler. The decor blends Rajputana, Mughal, and Art Deco influences. All cabins have individual climate control, LED TVs, Wi-Fi, and a direct-dial telephone. The two dining cars serve Indian and international cuisine prepared by chefs from the Taj and Oberoi hotels.

Royal Experiences

The Maharajas' Express includes experiences that no other train offers: a welcome ceremony with a red carpet, bagpipers, and traditional Indian music at every station. Guests receive a welcome drink of champagne or Indian wine. The bar car features a lounge with a baby grand piano. Off-train excursions include visits to the Taj Mahal at sunrise, a tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park, a camel safari in the Thar Desert, and a boat cruise on Lake Pichola in Udaipur. Every evening ends with a cultural performance at the destination.
