What Makes It Special

The Largest Religious Monument

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world by land area — 162.6 hectares. Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, it gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. The temple represents Mount Meru, the home of the gods in Hindu mythology. The five lotus-bud towers symbolize the five peaks of Mount Meru.

Bas-Reliefs of Epic Scale

The outer walls feature bas-reliefs that are among the finest in the world — over 1,000 square meters of carved sandstone depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, the Churning of the Sea of Milk, and the army of King Suryavarman II. The detail is extraordinary — individual soldiers, weapons, and costumes are distinguishable. The Churning of the Sea of Milk alone features 88 devas and 92 asuras pulling the naga (serpent) Vasuki.

The Temple Complex Beyond

Angkor Wat is just the beginning. The Angkor Archaeological Park covers 400 square kilometers and includes hundreds of temples. Bayon (with its 216 smiling faces), Ta Prohm (overgrown by jungle trees, made famous by Tomb Raider), Banteay Srei (the "Citadel of Women" with intricate pink sandstone carvings), and Preah Khan (a vast monastic complex). Each temple has a distinct character and history.
