What Makes It Special

Two Thousand Years of Construction

The Great Wall was built over centuries by multiple dynasties — Qin, Han, Ming, and others. The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) built the most famous sections, including Badaling and Mutianyu. The wall stretches from the Yellow Sea to the Gobi Desert, crossing mountains, valleys, and rivers. It was never a single continuous wall, but a network of walls, watchtowers, and fortifications.

Engineering on an Epic Scale

Built without modern machinery, the wall was constructed using local materials — stone in mountainous areas, rammed earth in plains, and brick near Beijing. Beacon towers used smoke and fire to relay messages across the empire in hours. The wall is wide enough for cavalry to ride along the top, with parapets for archers and slits for firing arrows.

Best Sections for Luxury Travelers

Badaling is the most visited (and most crowded) — avoid it. Mutianyu offers restored sections with cable cars and toboggan rides. Jinshanling is the photographers' favorite with stunning mountain views. Simatai is the only section open at night. Jiankou is the wild, unrestored section for serious hikers. For VIPs, private tours of unrestored sections can be arranged.

VIP Experience

Arrive at dawn for private access before the crowds. Stay at the Commune by the Great Wall (a collection of contemporary villas designed by 12 Asian architects, each with a unique design). Private helicopter tours offer aerial perspectives of the wall snaking through the mountains. The Aman at Summer Palace offers the most luxurious base in Beijing.
