What Makes It Special

Rediscovered in 1911

Hiram Bingham brought Machu Picchu to global attention in 1911, though local farmers always knew of its existence. The site was never found by Spanish conquistadors, preserving it from destruction. It was a royal estate for Emperor Pachacuti, abandoned in the 16th century during the Spanish conquest.

Engineering Marvel

Built without mortar, wheels, or iron tools — the Incas shaped and fitted stones with such precision that a knife blade cannot pass between them. The site includes agricultural terraces, temples, astronomical observatories, and a sophisticated water management system with 16 fountains. The Intihuatana stone served as a solar clock.

The Inca Trail

The classic 4-day Inca Trail covers 42 km through cloud forests, mountain passes, and Inca ruins. Alternative luxury options include the 1-day Royal Inca Trail, the Lares Trek (cultural focus with hot springs), and the Salkantay Trek (high-altitude challenge). All end at the Sun Gate at dawn.

Luxury Experience

Arrive by the luxury Hiram Bingham train from Cusco — complete with brunch, live music, and an observation car. Stay at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge (the only hotel at the citadel entrance). Private guided tours at dawn before the crowds arrive. Helicopter transfers from Cusco for the ultimate VIP arrival.
